Beauty, Darkness, and the Seeds of Hope: Stories From Thailand
Beauty, Darkness, and the Seeds of Hope: Stories From Thailand

My time in Thailand was filled with the tension of beauty and heartbreak—two realities that lived side by side everywhere I went. As I rode through the streets on a motorbike, I felt that duality deeply.
Thailand was breathtaking.
And yet, the darkness of exploitation was impossible to ignore.
I had been there preparing for our Wholeness Journey retreat through my nonprofit, partnering with organizations serving women and children rescued from human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The area we worked in was not a place for tourism. In fact, roughly 80% of foreigners who traveled there came for one reason: sex tourism.
As painful as it is to say, it was the top destination in the world for it.
People would come and move from bar to bar, brothel to brothel, club to club—purchasing girls and boys for hours or days at a time. Some came seeking entertainment, others for darker reasons too heavy to detail here. Each person trapped in this cycle had a story, and while the weight of it all could feel overwhelming, our role was clear: show up and be part of the solution.
Teaching Women to Dream Again
The women we worked with had never been given the chance to dream. Many grew up in extreme poverty, most with only a third-grade education. One woman had never held a pencil in her life.
But throughout the week, we got to walk with them as they learned to dream for the very first time.
We taught them how to set goals.
How to build accountability.
How to imagine a story beyond survival.
Now that they were in safe homes and no longer fighting day-to-day for their lives, possibility was finally something they could consider. We watched them begin to rewrite both the stories they had been handed and the futures they thought were out of reach.
A Night of Safety, Connection, and Hope
One of the most powerful evenings of our trip was when we purchased 21 women out of brothels—not to exploit them, but to bring them to a safe gathering at a church.
There, they shared a meal, heard a message of hope, enjoyed conversation, singing, and prayer, and learned about opportunities to leave the sex-for-sale industry.
This small church sat right in the heart of the red-light district, and the women who founded it had once been in those brothels themselves. They became living proof of transformation—and now they were offering others the same chance.
I spent time with one woman who had been invited many times before but never came. That night, she said yes.
She told me she had never experienced anything like it.
I will always remember her gratitude and the softness in her smile.
Meeting Women Where They Were
Another night, we went into the streets where hundreds of girls stood—girls men could approach and negotiate for within seconds. It was heartbreaking to witness.
On these nights, we passed out condoms and a small note sharing a message of love and a phone number they could call when they were ready for help.
People often asked why we didn’t hand out Bibles or devotionals instead. The truth is simple:
Most men did not provide protection.
Many women already had STDs.
Offering something they truly needed opened the door to meaningful conversation.
One young woman in particular stood out to me. She was stunning—inside and out. When I handed her the gift, her face lit up. She told me she had two children in one of the poorest regions of Thailand and had come to this city alone to support her entire family. As the eldest daughter, providing fell on her shoulders.
She shared how desperate she was to leave the streets.
I shared resources and reminded her of her worth.
And I prayed that a seed of hope was planted in her heart.
Healing the Deep Wounds
For those who had already been rescued and were now living in safe homes, we spent time helping them process the emotional burdens they had carried for years.
There were tears.
There were long silences.
There were stories spoken for the first time ever.
Shame had shaped so much of their lives, but healing began to break through as we walked them through practices designed to restore worth, identity, and future vision.
These moments were sacred, powerful, and unforgettable.
If You Feel Called to Help
The work we do is only possible because of the people who believe in our mission.
If you feel moved by these stories and want to support the work we’re doing to restore dignity, healing, and futures for survivors, you can donate toward our cause and mission. Every gift—no matter the size—creates hope and opens doors for someone longing for a new beginning.
Thank you for standing with us.
Thank you for believing that healing is possible.
And thank you for being part of this journey.
